Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, it is possible for supplements to improve mood; however, individual responses may vary. It’s best to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement. Here are a few top examples:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil): Omega-3s, particularly EPA and DHA found in fish oil, are crucial for brain health and cognitive function. Some studies suggest they may reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. They can also help with reducing inflammation in the body and improve cardiovascularhealth.
  • Vitamin D: Optimal vitamin D levels (60-100 ng/mL) are associated with better mood. Sun exposure and fortified foods are natural sources, but supplements can be helpful, especially in areas with limited sunlight and easiest way to improve levels relatively quickly
  • Magnesium: This mineral supports neurotransmitter function and mood regulation. Magnesium supplementation may help reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, insomnia, and even restless leg syndrome(RLS).
  • B-Vitamins: Vitamin B12 (greater than 400 pg/mL) and folate (B9) play important roles in mental well-being and improving energy.

Remember, these supplements are not standalone treatments for depression. Always seek professional guidance and consider them as additional options for overall well-being.

The time it takes to see results from supplements can vary based on individual factors, the specific supplement, and the dosage. However, here are some general guidelines:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil): Some people may notice improvements in their mood within a few weeks, while others may take longer. Consistent use is essential.
  • Vitamin D: If you’re deficient, raising your vitamin D levels may take a few weeks to a few months. Regular testing helps monitor progress; I prefer to have levels checked at least once every 6 months.
  • B-Vitamins: B-complex supplements may take a few weeks to show benefits as they support overall well-being.

Remember that supplements work best when combined with a healthy lifestyle, proper nutrition, exercise, and professional guidance.

The benefits of taking a daily multivitamin are a topic of ongoing debate. Here’s what the research indicates:

  • Johns Hopkins Medicine: Researchers found that multivitamins don’t significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, cognitive decline, or early death. However, they recommend folic acid for women of childbearing potential to prevent neural tube defects during pregnancy.
  • Forbes Health: Taking a daily multivitamin can help ensure against hidden micronutrient deficiencies that may impact immunity and overall health. Risks are low, and most people can benefit from them.
  • Harvard Health: While most people get enough nutrients from their diet, a daily multivitamin can be inexpensive and safe. It may help maintain brain health and fill occasional gaps in nutrition.

Remember, a healthy diet is most important. If you’re uncertain, consult with your healthcare professional to determine whether multivitamins are right for you. Although I typically do not recommend multivitamins such as “Centrum” or “One A Day,” I have recently discovered a few companies that produce high-quality multivitamins. Please see the Top Multivitamins section on this website.

Yes, definitely! The label is often more important than the price. Here are some tips to help you make informed decisions:

Third-Party Testing: Look for brands that undergo extensive testing, ideally by a third party. Organizations like ConsumerLab.com, NSF International, and U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) verify or certify products based on quality standards.

Quality Ingredients: Choose supplements with high-quality ingredients and have minimal fillers and do not contain unnecessary additives, such as calcium carbonate, cellulose, dicalcium phosphate, magnesium silicate, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, and titanium dioxide. These ingredients can negatively affect absorption, gut health, and the immune system.

Beware of Claims: Be cautious of claims that supplements can treat, diagnose, prevent, or cure diseases. Such claims are often misleading and may not be supported by evidence.

Remember, while price matters less, the right choice ensures you get the benefits you are looking for!
